Common Domain Extensions

Most of us, when thinking of the web in general and websites in particular, .com is what first comes to mind. This .com at the end of a website address is what is known as a domain extension – these have a particular function in the structure of the internet as a global construct and for that reason, there is more than one extension. In fact, there are quite a few possible extensions, but there are a few which are the most common among them.

While of course .com is the best known of these extensions, there are a few other common domain extensions – .net and .org are the most common other than .com. All three of these common domain extensions are known as top level domain extensions. These are the most commonly chosen extensions for websites.

.com is meant for use by commercially oriented websites, while .net was originally intended for non-commercial (generally speaking, personal) websites. .org was originally meant for use by non-profit organizations. However, there are no hard and fast rules governing the use of these common domain extensions. There are for-profit websites which use the .net and .org extensions, and non-profit organizations which use the .com extension.

The reason for this is that when registering a website, you may often find that the domain name you would like has already been registered by someone else in the domain extension of your choice. Since there are no actual regulations governing the use of these common domain extensions, you can use any of them that are available for your website. If you want to register your new website and find that the .com extension for the domain name is already taken, you may then try to register the domain name with the .net or .org extensions instead.

So which of these common domain extensions is right for your website? That all depends. While most people prefer the popular .com extension, at least if it is available, it is perfectly fine to use the .net and .org extensions as well. Just make sure that when telling people about your website that you remember to include the extension. Even though the other common domain extensions are growing more widely used as the number of sites on the web grows, it is still a habit for many to simply assume the extension will be .com.

There are plenty of other possible domain extensions; these are largely meant for specialized purposes and are best saved for another day. You can look into these less common domain extensions if you have a specific purpose for doing so. However, the vast majority of websites continue to use the big three domain extensions as they always have.

The Growth of Blogging as a Career

You’ve heard about them within your internet circles – stories of “professional” bloggers earning thousands just by sitting in front of their computers all day, writing and publishing posts that their massive base of readers just can’t wait to gobble up and comment about. As a blogger yourself, you are largely interested in this new development of internet technology, and you are tempted to jump in the blog career bandwagon.

To begin with, your own blog gets a decent number of hits everyday, and you have a steady set of readers who religiously visit your site to see what you’ve been writing. They even post a comment or two every so often. You wonder if these are all that it takes to start a career of being a professional blogger, and if it is, you just can’t wait to quit your job to pursue this instead.

And while it is true that there has been a growth in blogging as a career, becoming a professional blogger is not as easy as it seems, and it is certainly not for everyone. Read on to see what it takes, and whether you have it or not, to have blogging as a career.

Blogging as a career entails that a blogger is being financially compensated, whether on a regular or a per-project basis, for his or her blog writing. A career of this kind arose because today, a growing number of companies are looking for writers to regularly post articles and features on their company blogs. In this way, one can say that professional blogging is a form of copywriting, and is closely related to marketing a product, brand, service, or website.

Companies usually look for bloggers with a conversational writing style, who are able to write about topics that are both timely and relevant to the company’s employees, customers and potential customers. On the one hand, such requirements are relatively easy to acquire, which means you won’t have a problem when it comes to qualification. The problem, however, is that a lot of people like you are qualified for the job as well, meaning the competition is wide open, and brutally tough.

A professional blogger must also have the patience, skills, and interest for research, as he will definitely have to scour for information to put on his blog entries, and there will be a lot of entries to write and fill up with information. Thankfully, with the internet, it’s not that difficult to do research, and there is so much information to choose from.

So if you think you have what it takes to take on blogging as a career, by all means, go for it, and be a professional blogger now.

The Lowdown on Mobile Blogging Basics

It’s official – you’re the ultimate blog geek. You have been doing it for nearly two years now, posting entries on your personal blog almost every other day for the reading pleasure of quite a handful of your blog’s loyal fans. Lucky for you, your day job permits you to go online every so often within a day to check your blog and constantly put updates about your life, your thoughts, and your strange experiences.

But one day at work, you sit in front of your computer and type in the address of your blog, only to discover that the address has been blocked by administration. Apparently, there is a new rule that prohibits employees from accessing blog sites while they are at work.

One of the main reasons why you started a blog was so that you could have a place to vent out your frustrations about work, other people, and life in general. And a seemingly unfair rule that prohibits employees to visit blog sites is just the kind of frustration that you revel in ranting about on your blog. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem possible anymore.

Set aside your blogging blues for a second and read on, because here is some interesting information that we think you would find quite useful: the fact is, using a computer and the internet is not the only way to post on your blog. Thanks to technology, you can also compose and publish your blog entries through your mobile phone anytime, anywhere! Called mobile blogging, it is continuously gaining popularity as more and more individuals are getting hooked on what is also known as “moblogging”.

Can’t wait to get blogging on your mobile phone? Before you do, here are some tips on mobile blogging basics.

1. First things first: sign up for a blog that has mobile blogging capabilities.
2. Sign up for a new email account. Preferably, you are only to use this account for your mobile blogging activities.
3. Set up your weblogging software so that it will regularly check your email account for messages and emails to post.
4. Start moblogging! All you have to do is use your mobile phone to send messages or posts to your email account. The weblogging software that you set up will then be waiting for these emails, which the weblogging software is programmed to automatically post on your blog once it receives them.

So keep your blog juicy and updated whenever, wherever you are, with just a phone in hand and heaps of ideas. Start moblogging now!

Small Business Blog Tips That Can Make A Big Difference.

According to one software group, the number of bloggers has doubled in the past 2 years. This means many are using this medium to voice out an opinion or promote a business and this trend will continue to grow in the coming months.

There are some people who think that SEO’s do not need bloggers or the other way around. The truth is, it complements each other making it a win-win situation for everyone.

It best to first explain what is an SEO and what is a blogger.

A SEO helps people find information on a certain topic. If the person wants to know more about gothic art for example, all the user will do is type in this keyword and a list of possible sites will come out.

The blogger is someone who posts comments on just about anything. The recent crisis in the Middle East is a very good example about blogging. This is because it gives the reader the opinions of both the Lebanese and the Israelis.

How do the two fit in? When a person posts a blog, the article is stored by the SEO together with other works written about it. The big difference is that people who read it can post comments. This provides interaction between the writer and the reader and continues to go back and forth because of the fresh content.

But blogging can only be used for other purposes. This can be used by entrepreneurs to sell products and services.

A good example will be a real estate agent who wants to rent or sell property. By putting up a blog site and advertising this through a SEO, the chances of getting more inquiries and having someone buy it increases. The person will just have to put pictures and a comment section so that interested buyers may be interested to actually see it.

The person will first have to put up a blog site before anything can happen. This means downloading a standard template or building a one from scratch. This can be modified later on with ads and other things but the viewer will still focus on the blog’s content.

SEO’s and blogging work hand in hand in providing people with information that is needed. People who are interested in putting up a website and taking advantage of the various search engines should always have the time and energy to make sure it is always updated.

Why turning down offers can make you money

The path of a blogger, from beginner to professional is usually along the lines of starting as a hobby, discovering the world of monetization and attempting to make a business from your hobby. It’s an ideal situation which can be achieved with enough determination and motivation.

There is one hurdle that many serious bloggers get caught on and that’s accepting any offers that come your way. This may sound strange but the only way you’ll ever make a real business from your blogging endeavours is to turn down offers.

Managing resources

Your blog will only succeed as a business if you can manage your time and resources properly. Most bloggers work alone so any time spent designing, developing, researching, blogging and networking is a balance. Too much of one will lead to not enough of another. It’s a fairly straight forward principle and it’s something bloggers soon get used to as they try to build their empire.

You pay peanuts… You get monkeys

No doubt the first offers you get will be from PR agencies and content distribution companies. Some of which have very little interest in just what influence and traffic you have. There are rather alarming number of PR agencies just trying to improve their client’s search engine rankings through link sales and advertising. While advertising isn’t a bad thing (the big sites do it so why shouldn’t the little guy?) you’ll often find the companies that approach you are only willing to pay you peanuts. I’ve even had companies approach me telling me how generous they are that they’re giving me content for free! (I’ll rant about those another time).

While the lure of a few dollars may be tempting (It’s a couple of free beers right?!) Do some math. If this was your business model how many links would you have accept per week? How many advertorials would your site need to publish every week to make any decent money? More importantly how much of your precious time will it take to prepare, update and administer a transaction with anyone wanting advertising? Remember this includes invoicing, retrieving payment, updating your site, maybe formatting the advertorial and administering when the advertorial is removed (remember all advertising should be subscription based).

Be selective

Ultimately everything you do regarding your site will make you money. Whether it’s designing, developing, maintaining, blogging or networking, all of your hard work can lead to business opportunities. Accepting those bad-value offers means less time doing all those things that can lead to a real business opportunity, so turning them down wont lose you anything. Selecting the right business partnerships are what will make you money.

Forging longer term relationships with respectable companies and PR agencies that understand bloggers is what you’re really looking for. Understanding what your hard work is worth is a very important step in monetizing your blog. If you spend all your time working to earn $10 a month for an advertorial you’ll miss out on better opportunities that may come your way.

Keep it simple

Don’t worry if all this talk of “business” and “monetization” scares you. Remember you’re an independent blogger so you can make your blog as serious as you want it to be. The important thing is to value it and make sure others value your time and resources.
