Why turning down offers can make you money

The path of a blogger, from beginner to professional is usually along the lines of starting as a hobby, discovering the world of monetization and attempting to make a business from your hobby. It’s an ideal situation which can be achieved with enough determination and motivation.

There is one hurdle that many serious bloggers get caught on and that’s accepting any offers that come your way. This may sound strange but the only way you’ll ever make a real business from your blogging endeavours is to turn down offers.

Managing resources

Your blog will only succeed as a business if you can manage your time and resources properly. Most bloggers work alone so any time spent designing, developing, researching, blogging and networking is a balance. Too much of one will lead to not enough of another. It’s a fairly straight forward principle and it’s something bloggers soon get used to as they try to build their empire.

You pay peanuts… You get monkeys

No doubt the first offers you get will be from PR agencies and content distribution companies. Some of which have very little interest in just what influence and traffic you have. There are rather alarming number of PR agencies just trying to improve their client’s search engine rankings through link sales and advertising. While advertising isn’t a bad thing (the big sites do it so why shouldn’t the little guy?) you’ll often find the companies that approach you are only willing to pay you peanuts. I’ve even had companies approach me telling me how generous they are that they’re giving me content for free! (I’ll rant about those another time).

While the lure of a few dollars may be tempting (It’s a couple of free beers right?!) Do some math. If this was your business model how many links would you have accept per week? How many advertorials would your site need to publish every week to make any decent money? More importantly how much of your precious time will it take to prepare, update and administer a transaction with anyone wanting advertising? Remember this includes invoicing, retrieving payment, updating your site, maybe formatting the advertorial and administering when the advertorial is removed (remember all advertising should be subscription based).

Be selective

Ultimately everything you do regarding your site will make you money. Whether it’s designing, developing, maintaining, blogging or networking, all of your hard work can lead to business opportunities. Accepting those bad-value offers means less time doing all those things that can lead to a real business opportunity, so turning them down wont lose you anything. Selecting the right business partnerships are what will make you money.

Forging longer term relationships with respectable companies and PR agencies that understand bloggers is what you’re really looking for. Understanding what your hard work is worth is a very important step in monetizing your blog. If you spend all your time working to earn $10 a month for an advertorial you’ll miss out on better opportunities that may come your way.

Keep it simple

Don’t worry if all this talk of “business” and “monetization” scares you. Remember you’re an independent blogger so you can make your blog as serious as you want it to be. The important thing is to value it and make sure others value your time and resources.

When Will My Site To Acheive Momentum

Traffic is the ultimate goal for all webmasters; we strive to attract viewers and provide value to our readers. However, as you and I both know, creating traffic is a tedious, time consuming process for any developing blog. Spending more time promoting your content than creating it isn’t exacly enjoyable, but good news is, there will come a time when you can set aside traffic growing tasks and focus on writing- bloggers rejoice!
It’s called the Tipping Point
Once you have sustained a significant amount of traffic, your viewers will naturally adopt some of the responsibilities concerning advertising for you. A large volume of visitors means that you are putting out quality content, have a better chance of the “sharing types” viewing your posts and sending them to their friends, and of other bloggers seeing your content for what it is and providing links in their own posts.
Once your writing starts receiving its just recognition, you’ll see traffic levels gradually increase. This is known as Escape Velocity. At this point, your site has gained enough exposure and traction for it to sustain itself, much like a snowball rolling downhill. Content you generate will dissemenate across the web by its own accord, and you will be free to stop backlinking and promoting your blog.
When Will You Reach This Point?
It’s difficult to measure how long it takes to acheive enough momentum for this to occur. Many bloggers say it takes months, but naturally, it will differentiate from blogger to blogger. For many, it will start occurring once you acheive three hundred visits a day on a regular basis. It may take longer, or happen sooner, but this statistic is a reasonable goal.
It’s important to realize that this won’t all happen overnight. Your readers will gradually take on advertising responsiblities over time, and you will start to notice more shares, increasing traffic, and more backlinks well before your blog actually takes off. You might notice more links after your first month in, but this doesn’t mean you can relax just yet. Keep promoting your website well after the tipping point, to insure you don’t lose momentum just as it peaks.

Reaching escape velocity is the hard part. My only advice to you is to be thoroughly deligent in your promotion efforts and try to build up as much of a viewer-base as possible via various blogging strategies. The more people viewing your content, the more people sharing it. You have to really promote yourself to gain the fame and recognition required for your writing to self-dessimenate. It could take weeks, months, or even years, but if you keep pumping out useful content, slinging your product all over the web, and exposing your blog to a targeted audience, it will eventually happen. After that, you will be free to do what you really want with your blog and not have to spend so much effort promoting it. Heck, you might even make cash with all this newfound traffic!

Finding Great Niche Keyword

You hear a lot about niche marketing online. All that means is to find a little sub section in a market, one that has decent amount of interest but not much competition and fly under the radar. To do that, you will need to find niche keywords for that niche market.

There are many great markets you can make money in online. But you will save yourself a lot of time and effort if you don’t try to go toe to toe with the ‘big boys’.

For example, lets say you want to make money in the weight loss market, which is an extremely competitive market. Why make your life harder than it needs to be by trying to go straight on against millions of competitors? That’s just silly.

Instead, why not find a ‘little’ sub section of that market where there will be much less competition but still enough interest for you to make a very nice living (and remember, this is just one website. You can repeat this method as many times as you want and have dozens of niche websites all making you money).

So, instead of focusing on such a broad term as weight loss, why not find a niche that targets “middle aged women and weight loss”? Or how about “teenage boys weight loss”? See what I mean, you are still in the weight loss market but you are targeting a more precise sub section of the market instead of trying to throw a net over the whole ocean.

Doing this will make it so much easier to make money online. It will just make your life so much simpler and you can find a great list of highly targeted keywords that you can rank for a lot more easily than you would if you went with the broad weight loss terms.

To find highly targeted keywords for your niche all you have to do is to use the free Google Keyword Tool online. Start by entering a broad search term related to your niche, say weight loss for moms. The tool will give you a list of up to two hundred variations of that keyword.

Some of the variations will work, some won’t. But it will give you a great place to start. From there you can drill down even further until you have a nice big keyword list to work from.

You also want to make sure that the keywords you choose are highly relevant to your website. Don’t choose a bunch of keywords that have a high monthly search volume if they are not highly relevant to what your website is all about. The traffic that you get won’t be very targeted and your conversions will suffer.

Finding great niche keywords is one of the most important tasks you can master to have a successful online business. Good keywords may take some time to find but when you do they are like money in the bank. Use the free tools online or invest in some down loadable software, it’s up to you. Just make sure you know what you need to look for and the difference between a good keyword and a not so good keyword.

How does successful niche blogging happen?

Well, it starts with a niche, of course.

Possibly, a niche you really love and have something (plenty of things!) to tell about.

But it also takes planning, committment and relationships with other bloggers.

In this guide, we will show you how to get into successful niche blogging in 12 simple steps.

(Yes, 12! Not one more!)

1. Successful niche blogging starts with… a niche (that you love!)

That might sounds obvious, but it’s tough to keep a blog running for years if you pick a niche you don’t really love.

And you read that image above right— once you pick a niche you are really passionate about, feelings of regret or to be mistaken or to have chosen the wrong path just don’t happen— you will be driven by your emotions and regret nothing about your choice.

That’s the number one rule for successful blogging made simple: pick a niche you feel really comfortable with, are passionate about and have tons of ideas to share about.

2. You have to understand how niche blogging works

Blogger Jane Sheeba of ProBloggingSuccess.com created an entire blog around this mission— to help new bloggers understand how niche blogging works and how to get started in the process.

The “adventure” you’re about to begin (or you have already begun) is less scary than it sounds— all you need to get started is Step #1 and then keep in mind that

niche blogging is NOT personal blogging (even though you may use anecdotes from your personal life to draw the reader in) and it has to help the reader solve the problems they encounter in their daily life within that specific niche (or industry).

That means you need to be committed to providing:

Quality, trusted and well-researched content
Hands-on, actionable advice

3. Pick a meaningful domain name and a reliable host

Your domain name should be short and clever, but at the same time meaningful, easy to remember and permanent, because that will become your brand.

4. Brainstorm your blog essentials: About Me page, Mission statement and Topics

Yes, you read it right: those two pages and blog topics are your essentials— you’re going nowhere without them.

Here’s why:

About Me page – Your users want you know who you are, what you do, and especially why they should trust you. In other words, give them one or more reasons to stick with you!
Mission statement – What is your blog about? Why did you create it? You can go easy style with your mission statement by creating a Manifesto like Carol Tice did.
Topics – Successful blogging topics may include top and low ranked keyword in your niche (see #11 for SEO!) or hot topics in niche forums and social media trends.
Get to work on these three essentials before you proceed to Step #6 — because Step #5 is actually here to tell you a bit more about the About Me page.

5. About… the About Me page

Often overlooked or sloppy written, the About Me page is actually your stronger blog asset, even more than any best Media Kits you may produce.

As we mentioned earlier, your About Me page speaks of three important things about you:

The human being behind the blog name
Why readers should trust what you say
What you do and how it relates to your core message and content
But it doesn’t end there, because your About Me page is also a good place to:

Share photos that add to your credibility as a niche blogger
Share any awards and accomplishments you achieved in your chosen niche
Share links to other blog posts (or guest posts) you’ve written on important topics related to your niche, and why
Add a short Q&A about what you do and your approach to your niche blogging mission

6. Get a good design for your blog template

A good design is your blog’s first approach with the reader— it has to trigger interest and inspire trust and positive thoughts.

If WordPress is your blogging platform of choice, we have reviewed several free and paid themes over the last year— with interesting designs that appeal to the user.

A good rule of thumb is that your blog template design and color scheme should match your niche.

Keeping the psychology of colors in mind should also be a must to help your readers stay focused on content without distractions or headaches.

7. Write a GREAT first blog post!

Look at Linkarati’s first post as an example. That was something of a great first post!

8. Write evergreen content

Evergreen content is content that stays helpful and current even with the passing of time.

For example, a blog post about how to grow roses in a small yard is an evergreen post: no matter how much time passes since it first went live, the way to grow roses in a small yard doesn’t change over time.

9. Create Social Media profiles for your blog

Making Money From A Niche Blog

When it comes to creating niche web sites, many people are confused what the best approaches are to earning money from their blog.

Some blog owners are creative people who like to redesign their blog endlessly to get it just right, whilst others are born writers but do not have much of a clue when it comes to making money from their blog. Many fall in the middle between being someone focused on design and someone who only likes to write. Few people that start a blog are born businessmen or businesswomen.

Google Adsense
One of the best starting points for new bloggers is Google’s Adsense advertising system. Here they accept many thousands of different adverts every day and place them on appropriate websites (and now mobile sites too) which are relevant to the advertiser  Therefore, if you have a blog focused on the best furniture repair techniques, then advertisers looking to promote their own furniture-related business, DIY store and the like, may appear on your site.

In order to get an idea what you would receive from an ad click, you will need to have a Gmail account with Google and access Google’s own keyword research tool. This is located here: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.

When searching for relevant keywords, you will see a column entitled CPC and this tells you what the advertiser is willing to pay for a single visitor to their own site. The percentages vary for what the site owner will receive who acts as a publisher for the advert on their site, but percentages vary typically from 20-40% of the CPC. With enough traffic and ad clicks, this can add up over time.

Private Advertising
If you wish, you can also trying approaching companies yourself and selling your own ad space directly.

To be successful here, you will need to have developed a blog that is receiving several thousand unique visitors a month, possibly with a Google PageRank of 3 or higher, and it is also good to have visitors staying over a minute or more.

There are also several bloggers that have begun offering their own advertising management services, using their own advertiser list developed over time, and taking a cut of the ad sales they create for your blog.

Affiliate Products
Affiliate products is also a great way to generate additional revenue for your blog. Here you are recommending products to site visitors in the hope that they will make a purchase. You will receive an affiliate code (to identify you) when referring the visitor to the sellers’ site and if they make a purchase then you will receive an affiliate commission.

Commission rates vary from as low as 1-2% all the way up to 70+% for some products listed on Clickbank.
