Do you go for the brand or the keywords?

This depends on what site you are trying to build and what your goals are for your blog.

Some prefer to use keyword rich domain names so that their blog will be easy to find on Google. While others choose to use brandable domain names to make a mark in their niche.

When you go the brandable route…

you’ll find it easier to get an available domain name
you’ll have a domain that’s unique
you’ll have to work smarter to get search engine rankings for your site
When you go for a keyword rich route…

you’ll find it harder to get an available domain name
you’ll have a generic sounding domain
you’ll have a good chance to rank higher in the search engines if your domain has an exact keyword that people are searching for online
A middle ground would be to choose a domain name that has one of your keywords and another one that represents your brand.

For example, if you’re trying to build a blog about diaper cakes, you can either go for keyword domain name diapercake.com or the brandable domain name diapercakediaries.com.

As of this writing, there are 40,500 people searching Google for the term “diaper cake” everyday. If you have the domain diapercake.com and you’ve got thousands of links pointing to your site, chances are your site will appear on the first page of Google when people search for that term.

However, when you’ve got diapercakediaries.com, you stand a chance of building up your brand as the go to source or blog about diaper cakes.

There are other ways, aside from having a keyword domain name, to build your rank in Google’s results page. When you work smart to build a great site and you’ve got people linking to you to prove it, you can still land on page one.

And did I mention your name is cooler? ;)

Personally, I’ve used both brandable and keyword domain names. I prefer brandable domain names for sites I am passionate about and intend to associate myself with. I used a keyword domain name for a site I built to sell physical products.
